Our History

Project Recovery Huemul

The Shoonem Foundation originated in southern Patagonia, to become a management tool for the newly created Protected Park Shoonem, from the standpoint of sustainable development, and with due respect for the needs of the surrounding ecosystem. Its name, is taken from the Tehuelche language, which is used to identify the HUEMUL deer, a wild deer which is only found in Patagonia and which together with so many other species, today is considered in danger of extinction. Those who founded the organization have their roots in Patagonia and saw our future in this fabulous landscape. We are convinced that we can achieve a sustainable change for the Drainage Basin of the Senguer River with its Protected Park Shoonem based on the conservation of nature, the promotion of Protected Areas and with the cooperation of the people and their community. The common roots in our desires, is what unites and integrates us in the challenge to build together a collectively preserved area.
Tehuelche: name given to one of the Indian nation who inhabited these lands.
